as i had never created a rig for a car before I found a tutorial to explain the process this is the one i found:
http://cg.tutsplus.com/tutorials/autodesk-3ds-max/create-an-advanced-drifting-car-rig-in-3ds-max-day-1/
i have found it extremely helpful and the author gave support when i had issues.
to start with i set up the wheels, this consisted of making a helper>Dummy for each wheel hub, a dummy for each wheel and a dummy for each front wheel all aligned to the wheels of my model.
alot of linking occurred so the boxes would follow each other if moved.
i then made a spline for the suspension to follow and another dummy is added for the suspension anchor,
and then linked with a line which is then attached to the anchors with a position constraint.
using the percentage on path attribute i used a float expression to modify the position of the suspension anchor when the wheel is moved. the move its moved the more the effect.
i then linked the two axles down the middle of the car so the body can be effected when the supsension moves.
another dummy is then created to link the car body.
orientation constraints are used to affect the box.
an ik solver is used to average the body momentum movements to help it look more realistic.
i then created a spline circle and increased the thickness to create a handle to control the drift. all the other componants were then linked to it.
i then created 2 dummys for the steering loot ats. i lookat contrainted the steering hubs of the rig to each respectivly.
again i created a handle to make it easier to control the dummys and linked the dummys to it.
i just move the handle and the wheels steer toward it.
